European Research Area and research projects

The European Research Area (ERA) is a policy concept of the European Union. It aims to improve and coordinate the framework conditions for research and innovation in Europe.

The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation "Horizon 2020" is the most important instrument for the implementation of priorities within the European Research Area.

As a Federal Ministry, the BMEL is responsible for the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and for agricultural and food research issues. In the area of research and innovation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) also carries out activities on agricultural and nutritional issues.

While to the current EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation "Horizon 2020" is going to its end, the newly established programme "Horizon Europe (2021-2027)" places a stronger focus on the impact of funded research. Implications that are more social will be in focus as well. Any expected impact of the work programmes must be clearly defined and realistically. Defined expected impact at project level has to be different from that at programme level. Developed indicators will measure the impacts/effects. The impacts are not limited to the economic impact, but can have a variety of facets, including societal ones.

The BMEL funds initiatives within the framework of ERA-NET and joint programme initiatives (JPI) through the BLE Project Management Agency (ptble).
