BMEL announcement: Agroecological innovations for territorial markets

Research funding for project-consortia consisting of German, Sub-Saharan African, South and Southeast Asian partners on the topic: "Agroecological innovations for territorial markets".

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) published the fifth call for research proposals on June 7th 2024 under the funding instrument "International research cooperation for global food security". BLE acts as project-managing agency. 

The announcement focuses on research into the potential of agroecology for territorial markets and value chains in order to improve food security locally and thus indirectly promote a sustainable transformation of agricultural and food systems.

According to the 13 principles laid out by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE, 2019), agroecology functions as a holistic socio-ecological approach that reaches far beyond the bounds of agricultural production. It provides a holistic concept, which is fundamental to the BMEL's international project cooperation. Interlinkages with the various activities funded by the BMEL are expressly desired.

In the frame of this call for proposals aims to encourage submissions, fostering cooperative research projects between agricultural and nutritional science research institutions in Germany and their counterparts in Sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia are funded, which contribute to the research and establishment of innovative, resilient, regionally adapted, and sustainable agricultural and food systems. The main objective is to improve the nutritional situation of the population in the target regions by providing sufficient high-quality food. The results of the research projects should in the long term contribute to food security and food sovereignty in the target regions. Through inter- and transdisciplinary multi-stakeholder approaches, the aim is to develop practical, feasible and sustainable solutions adapted to the local context.
