BMEL announcement: Agroecological innovations for territorial markets

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) just published the fifth call for research proposals on "Agroecological innovations for territorial markets" under the funding instrument "International research cooperation for global food security".

The announcement focuses on research into the potential of agroecology for territorial markets and value chains in order to improve food security locally and thus indirectly promote a sustainable transformation of agricultural and food systems.

Short project proposals can be submitted until Monday, 30 September 2024 via easy-Online.

According to the 13 principles laid out by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE, 2019), agroecology functions as a holistic socio-ecological approach that reaches far beyond the bounds of agricultural production. It provides a holistic concept, which is fundamental to the BMEL's international project cooperation. Interlinkages with the various activities funded by the BMEL are expressly desired.

The call for proposals aims to encourage submissions, fostering cooperative research projects between agricultural and nutritional science research institutions in Germany and their counterparts in Sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, which contribute to the research and establishment of innovative, resilient, regionally adapted, and sustainable agricultural and food systems. The main objective is to improve the nutritional situation of the population in the target regions by providing sufficient high-quality food. The results of the research projects should in the long term contribute to food security and food sovereignty in the target regions.

The short research proposals should reflect an inter- and transdisciplinary multi-stakeholder approach and develop practical, feasible and sustainable solutions adapted to the local context.

Funding is only available for consortia consisting of at least one German research institution and at least one research institution from Sub-Saharan Africa and/or South and/or Southeast Asia.

Further information regarding the funding criteria as well as the components and requirements related to the submission of a short project proposal are provided in the announcement.
